Woman charged for homeowners insurance fraud
Sunbury, Pa. — A Sunbury woman fraudulently claimed she had recent water damage in her home just one day after she purchased a homeowners insurance policy, investigators say.
An insurance claim made on July 25, 2023 tipped off an investigation that led officials to charge 40-year-old Amy R. Wells. Investigators say Wells made the claim just one day after she purchased insurance through Travelers Indemnity Company.
Here's what happened according to Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General Special Agent Joseph Labert:
Wells purchased the insurance policy on July 24, 2023 with an effective date of July 25, 2023. The day she purchased the policy, Wells called Travelers with a series of hypothetical questions pertaining to storm or fire damage on the roof. At that point in time, Wells lowered her deductible from $5,000 to $1,000. Wells told Travelers she did not have prior homeowners insurance.
